Many of us Muslim, I can ensure that they already knew this Thursday would be the new year of Gregorian/ Christian calendar. Issue here is that most probably we did not realized that yesterday was our Hijri new year.
Maybe we do not appreciate 'our' new year because we don't really know the real meaning and story behind the emigration/Hijrah of our beloved prophet Muhammad s.a.w.
I want to remind myself first and then you all that we should learn and search for the story so that we can really appreciate this moment.
This is not a normal emigration; the Hijrah was a first step of spreading Islam to entire world from west region of Alaska to east region of China.
When Makah was no safer for Rasullullah to do Dakwah, Allah had brought six men from Medina to learn about Islam and return to Medina and teach people there. The situation getting worse in Makkah as the disbeliever (Quraish) starting to threat Rasullullah. At that time, Islam had grown bigger in Madinah, and Allah send some people from Medina to invite Rasulullah to immigrate to Medina.
As you know, Rasulullah had some planning like taking Abu Baker as-Siddiq as companion for the journey and took different route to Medina so that Makah people (disbeliever) cannot follow him.
After Allah had save our Prophet and he arrived safely in Medina, Rasulullah first built a mosque to show that how important is a mosque to Muslim community. Then, Rasullulah created brotherhood among Islam in Medina, Muhajirin the emigrants and Ansar the helper. Ansar shared house and half of their property with their new brothers.
This was the starting point of Hijri and Umar al-Khattab had put it as the starting of Hijri calendar.
